I've been having a lingering problem with Firefox hanging on some sites,
with it getting especially bad recently with nytimes.com, to the point
where I stopped visiting it because it would freeze the entire browser for
something like 10 seconds.

I noticed it was getting stuck loading typeface.nytimes.com and I also
noticed another sports site I visit getting stuck on fonts.voxmedia.com

So I goggled around, and found that going into about:config and turning off
the listing for gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled has made Firefox load vastly
faster.

Does anyone know if this is just a Firefox problem, or is it some deeper
indication of problems with the fonts on my PC? Things look fine on my PC
in Firefox and Word etc., but to be honest I'm not sure I could tell the
difference between Bodoni and Balloon fonts.

It's not (probably) a problem with your PC but with the still horrendous
handling of HTML 5 downloadable fonts. Basically, your browser will not
start rendering the page until all the fonts have been downloaded.

That, of course, is intended to give you an "enhanced browsing
experience."

On one of the sports sites I was looking at to figure out the source of
their fonts, they had an archived page that proudly showed off their new
improved fonts, which looked barely any different from standard stuff,
at least to my untrained eye. Maybe it was my PC or browser, but it's
just hard to imagine that it's worth the hassle of going to an outside
server just to play around with fonts on their website.

Looks like about:config is _mostly_ about fonts!

I found this in there though:

noscript.forbidFonts;true

NoScript: gotta luv it!

Sure it's a PITA sometimes, but you can just increase the permissions
incrementally until you get what you want, & not what you don't.
