A misprint of a superfluous word.
The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48 (gcide)
Areal A"re*al, a. [Cf. L. arealis, fr. area.] Of or pertaining to an
area; as, areal interstices (the areas or spaces inclosed by the
reticulate vessels of leaves). [1913 Webster]
The body text has the right spelling, but the sense of the sentence
wouldn't change if the word were omitted entirely.

So IBM and Sony are still using tape recorders. Who knew?
