What is the pink powder the janitors at school used when someone threw up at
school? Does it have other uses, or is it manufactured for the sole purpose of
soaking up puke? What are their quality control tests like? Do you suppose the
factory that makes it has tours?

It was probably some industrial absorbent that has been in use since the 1930s
or before, made up of sawdust and an absorbent clay (Fuller's Earth). I saw an
on-site demonstration of the stuff in an industrial setting, but it was a sham;
they were using plastic vomit.

Yes, it's much like cat litter.

Sounds rather pointless.

I remember it as being bright green. That was a long time ago,
so maybe they've changed the formula. I'd love to be in the test
labs. Do they have large supplies of something with the
essential physical properties of vomitis, or do they need to work
with the real thing? If they have a substitute, is it something
they cook up themselves in the Artificial Vomit Department, or
can you buy the stuff in the open market? A product like that
would knock the bottom out of the plastic vomit market.

Not at all -- they were using plastic imitation absorbant, too.

At our school it was kind of orange brown. It looked like pencil sharpener
shavings. It probably *was* pencil sharpener shavings.

Googling on 'janitorial supplies vomit' is enlightening. I'd never heard
of the product 'jelling vomit absorbant' before, but that's a hell of band
name.

Order up some of your own http://www.cleanfreak.com/Qstore/c000158.htm for
only $28.14 per case.

I don't know what it is *exactly*, but it's nothing more than an absorbent
- spread it around, it absorbs the liquid components, then you can sweep
it up.

Similiar products are also used by fire departments and rescue crews for
cleaning up fluids after accidents. The last accident I was on the scene
of that used it used something more akin to kitty litter.

Kind of like the stuff they use in auto garages to clean up oil on the
concrete.

Why is it always "on the scene"? "Emergency crews are on the scene".
"Firefighters are on the scene". "Police are on the scene". Why aren't
they ever just there?
